Plenty of good snow to be had in La Plagne this week

The snow returns to La Plagne

Well I can’t help but feel like the snow gods are listening and coming through for us when we need them. We’ve survived these peak weeks of February with an admirable covering of snow all over the mountain, but towards the end of this week the cracks were starting to show and the ice was beginning to make an appearance.

Now, lo and behold, fresh snow is falling to cover up the cracks and freshen the mountain up nicely for skiers on the last few days of their holiday. It simply must be the work of benevolent snow gods, because the forecast was showing only light flutters of snow overnight that didn’t even register as centimetres and instead we’re having a white out day as the snow continues to fall all morning and shows no sign of stopping.

Around 5 cm has fallen at 2000m so far and the freezing level is dipping to 1000m tonight so it looks like it’ll stick.

And that’s not even the best of it, oh no, there’s more snow on the way, and this 'aint no flutters or showers, this is legitimate heavy snow on the forecast for Monday and Tuesday. We’re looking at 15cm falling Monday night with about 55cm promising to dump on Tuesday... Call in sick on Wednesday people, it’s gonna be a powder day!

Unfortunately the freezing level isn’t reaching quite the bottom lifts and some of that is due to fall as rain at the lower altitudes but up above 1500m we’re in for some fresh snow and if you’re lucky enough to be heading out to resort this weekend you picked a great week for it.

Apart from the obviously enjoyment that new snow brings I’m personally thankful for this fresh dumping for other reasons. In this last week there’s been a dirty rumour circling resort that winter is all over. It happens every year, a little bit of sunshine, a little bit of un-seasonal warmth and people write off the winter, people start talking spring skiing and making summer plans, booking tickets to tropical lands and online shopping for mermaid bikinis. Well I’m here to tell you to stop it!

This winter is far from over, we have two full months of lifts open yet, fresh snow on the forecast and if last year is anything to go by plenty of powder days still to come. Last season ran very similar to this one; late snow start, big dumps in January, not much snow through February and then bam! Powder days straight through to the end April! I exaggerate only a little, it didn’t snow straight through but I really was knee deep in powder on the last week of lifts last year and I have absolute faith that we’ll see the same kind of snow this year. So put down the board shorts, unpack the thermals and settle back in for two more months of winter.

In other news, anyone who was around last night couldn’t fail to have noticed the Born To Be Show kicking off in Plagne Centre with its pumping music, acrobatic ski display, torchlight descents and the loudest fireworks the world has ever heard. A huge crowd gathered at the base of the Stade Olympic to watch the spectacle of wintersports skills with skiers and snowboarders throwing themselves off a massive kicker as well as synchronised ski displays, piste bashers showing off and even the blood wagon drivers turning up to showcase their speed and prowess on the slopes, you can rest assured you’re in good hands if you ever find yourself being carried down the mountain by these guys, they’ve got skills.

Now we’ve got one more week of French half term ahead of us and although that won’t bring quite the same numbers as the last few weeks it will still mean that there are family fun and games going on around resort, keep an eye on the noticeboards of your accommodation and in the main squares of your resort village so you don’t miss any of the entertainment.

Enjoy the fresh snowfall today and make the most of the sunny weekend because come Monday the snow returns!!!
