Easter skiing in La Plagne

A little flurry of snow on the forecast

featured in Snow report Author Anita Gait, La Plagne Reporter Updated

After last week’s empty pistes, long lunches, sunny days and almost deserted mountain this week might have come as a bit of a shock.

Gone is the languorous pace of an empty mountain winding down to summer and instead we find ourselves in the midst of a resort revived, La Plagne is vibrant once more and teeming with people making the most of the Easter break and a last ski holiday before the end of the season.

All of a sudden the mountain is alive again, with crowds waiting at lifts, bar and restaurant terraces filled to capacity with lunchers and drinkers, ski school classes snaking past you and it seems that children outnumber adults 2 – 1. This injection of people and energy will probably last two weeks until the Easter crowds head home and the mountain winds down for real this time with one more week before the lifts shut.

Make the most of these fun and frantic weeks by keeping your eyes open for events happening around resort last week saw the Rando by Night mountain climb and the Super Slalom race from the top of the Becoin all the way to La Roche but this week see’s the start of the Subli’Cimes festival.

This year La Plagne is throwing the third instalment of the Subli’Cimes festival which has been a big hit for two years now. The festival involves activities and adventures set up at 6 different stations on all the major peaks around resort, it runs from the 5th to the 18th of April so you have plenty of time to hit up every zone and pick your favourite.

My top zone is definitely the Adrenaline area at the top of the Roche de Mio, here you can leap off platforms on to giant airbags, be catapulted into the air on a reverse bungee and try to be the last one standing on the 8 man wipe out game. Coming a close second is the Arpette centre of Zen Altitude, the perfect antidote to any stress this spot has hot tubs, saunas and massages as well as classes in yoga, tai chi and active meditation.

Kids will want to check out Fairy Land at Fornelet and Dino Zone at La Rossa, here they can lose themselves in magical games and stories or be intrepid explorers of history with excavation games and challenges of discovery all under the watchful eye of the giant Tyrannosaurus Rex. Fun for the whole family is waiting at the Grande Rochette Viking Camp where war craft is the name of game and javelins, bows, axes, and shields are the weapons of choice. There will be workshops where you can learn to make and use these pointy toys as well as classes in the art of ancient rune reading and legends and tales by the boatload. Last but not least is the Becoin Health and Beauty Zone featuring beauty parlour, barber shop, temporary tattoo stand, solarium and smoothie bar.

If you’re in resort this week or next do make sure you check out the Subli’Cimes festival it’s a whole lot of fun and the best thing about it is that it’s all completely free, you can participate in as many activities and events as you like as often as you’d like and it won’t cost you a penny, not bad indeed.

Elsewhere in resort this week you’re going to see a bit of a change to the slopes, the return of the crowds is going to do away with the smooth slopes of last week and you’re going to see moguls and channels appearing much quicker than they have been. Head out for first lifts if you want well groomed pistes and fresh cords and knock off early in the afternoon if your knees are giving you grief.

The snow that hit us Saturday night and Sunday didn’t last very long below 2500m where it didn’t really settle but it freshened things up nicely at the Roche de Mio and fresh tracks were still to be had at the Glacier yesterday. Some more flurries of snow are due to hit us tonight and Wednesday then it’s back to the sunshine and blue skies to which we’ve become accustomed so don’t forget your sunscreen!

Have a great week in La Plagne, with a little bit of snow, a lot of sunshine and a festival on the way what more could you ask for?
