La Plagne Apres Ski Report: 13th February 2013

The Colours Of Love

Last night saw a slightly pre-emptive but very successful Valentines party thrown by Oxygene Ski & Snowboard School, taking their usual breathe party and giving it a flirty twist with a traffic lights theme.

You dress according to your romantic status; Red = hands off, yellow = I could be convinced and Green = all systems go, single and ready to mingle. If you’re not at all sure or just like to mess with people you can rock all three colours at once or try a combination suited to your needs as I saw one girl doing, she was wearing green from head to foot but with a pair of red pants on over her trousers, that = Chastity belt.

Oxygene held a ski raffle, the main prize being a pair of Dynastar 6th sense twin tips which incidentally went to the kid with the best Gangnam style dance moves - although that’s not how he won them. The other prizes on offer were free super luging, private lessons and yours truly walked away with a very snazzy Oxygene hoodie which I shall be wearing with pride!

The Be Sharps were playing and as usual brought the house down with their mixed up setlist and off the wall personalities. Their quirky slant of the week? They were all sporting various artistically drawn, marker pen facial hair (except the lead singer who went for Kiss style eye stars) which soon afflicted the crowd and there’s not many people who made it home without some sort of Sharpie accessory.

Unfortunately that was the Be Sharps last gig in La Plagne! I think is a travesty and I’m taking it as personal insult. I can’t lie they are definitely my favourite band of the season so far, (a title which you can help them win by taking the survey on the Gigz Management Facebook page). I think I might have to start a petition or send a strongly worded letter to management in a bid to get them reinstated!

Scotty’s bar staff, loving a good theme night were pushing traffic light beers on all comers - that is beer mixed with several spirits and fruit juice and comes in three varieties, unsurprisingly given the name – red, yellow and green. Its guaranteed to get you rip roaring drunk especially if you do it as you should – buy all three at once and race a friend to the end, (prepare for colourful vomit). Hint - the yellow one is awful, green is actually strangely good, get used to it you’ll be drinking plenty more come Paddy’s day.

If you’re looking for a slightly more romantic, less ridiculous Valentines evening I can recommend dinner at La Metairie, I recently ate there with a bunch of friends and the food and service is wonderful. The menu boasts of all the Savoyarde favourites – fondue, pierrade, raclette and tartiflette as well as steaks, pizza and salads I of course went for a cheese fondue, it’s all about the fondue. One of our party had the Steak Tartare which consists of a plate of raw beef, generally minced or thinly chopped, which is then seasoned to your liking at the table, there is generally an egg yolk mixed in and then your choice of onions, capers, various herbs and spices, Worcester sauce, Tabasco etc. it is a delectable dish (although the texture does take some getting used to) and La Metairie definitely do the best one in town.

Perhaps after your dinner date you’ll fancy a nightcap? Take that special someone up to the La Rhumerie, situated in Aime 2000 directly outside the doors of the Telemetro. It is a tiny bar with plenty of character and rum of every flavour and combination. If your looking to add a sense of occasion try a Beijing, a potent cocktail of spirits and no mixers, which is constructed at your table and set alight to form a tower of flame which burns down to leave you with a pleasant if extremely deadly cocktail. Or if you really want to heat things up for Valentines Day try a shot of their chilli rum – go on, I dare you!

Whatever – or whoever – you get up to have a happy Valentines Day!
