La Grande Odyssee comes to La Plagne

Epic husky sled races comes to resort for the first time

The largest husky dog race in Europe comes to La Plagne on Friday 13th January, the first time this event has been in our neck of the woods.

The event has already seen five stages take place, with teams mushing their way through Les Carroz, the Grand Massif, Les Gets, Praz de Lys and Morillon, day and night. Tomorrow they compete in La Plagne.

It's an endurance, mixed format race, taking place over 11 days and ten different stages, with teams covering a whopping 670km in total. Teams race their dog sleds around the mountain pistes on a pre-determined course, hoping to be the first over the line. It's an international affair too, with Swiss, French, Czech and Spanish teams taking part this year.

Stage 6 will start on Friday 13th January in Plagne Montalbert at 13:30 and complete two to three laps, passing by the Bobsleigh track by around 14:30, 15:45 and 16:00 - a good place to go and watch them. The race will take all day with teams crossing the finish line back in Montalbert at any time between 16:45 and 20:25. Winners will be crowned from 17:30 onwards in Montalbert and then the teams pack up and head over to Val Cenis for stage 7 on the 14th and 15th January.

Nothing on this scale takes place anywhere else in Europe, and it's on par with iconic races such as the epic Yukon Quest, so it's a must see event if you're here in resort.
