Fresh snow in La Plagne as Easter approaches

7-day weather forecast for the week of March 26th, 2018

featured in News & reviews Author Rob Wood, La Plagne Reporter Updated

After a rare, mostly snow-free week, we look set for some lovely fresh snow in advance of the Easter weekend. Although last week was mainly snow-free, cold temperatures ensured that the already great snow cover remained in tip-top condition. This week, however, will bring a fair bit of snow just in time for the busy Easter period. Rather than one significant dump, it seems like we'll get snow “little and often” every day through until Good Friday.

The ever-fluctuating and all important Jetstream starts the week way down over Morocco, before returning to a more “normal” Central European location by the middle/end of the week. This fluctuation will bring in some moisture-laden clouds from the Atlantic area. With high pressure in control, several weather fronts are building out in the Atlantic which should bring in moisture. Combine this with the area of high pressure towards Siberia and the cold air mass meeting the moist air, and snow is the outcome!

A fluctuating freeze height may bring some rain at resort level but hopefully not too much. Across the week, anything between 60 and 80cm is possible up on the higher slopes. This really will set things up perfectly for the run-in to the end of the season.

This incredibly snowy season looks like carrying on!

Monday

Quite a breezy day with winds from the north potentially at around 20kmph, which may lead to some intermittent lift closures. Any early sunshine will be replaced with cloud and some light snow in the afternoon when around 10cm may fall in total. The cold temperatures of late will continue with daytime highs of around -5ºC, which will ensure precipitation fall as snow with a freeze height of around 1600 metres.

Tuesday

After a bit of initial sunshine to start off, it will be another largely light snowy day. Winds will start northerly before backing round to westerly and they will be breezy at around 15kmph. Around 15cm of snow is possible throughout the day, likely to be at its heaviest in the early evening. Another cold day with highs of around -2ºC and feeling a bit chillier in the breeze, with a continuing freeze height of around 1600 metres.

Wednesday

It will remain breezy with westerly winds at around 15kmph, possibly gusting up to 25kmph, which may lead to some lift closures. A rise in the freeze height in the morning may lead to some rainfall at resort level. Around 20cm of snow is possible at higher elevations but a freeze height of around 2000 metres will probably see some lower rain. Daytime highs may top out at around +3ºC, hence the rising freeze height.

Thursday

Winds continuing from the west but dropping to around 10kmph overnight. A freeze height of around 1700 metres will see snow on all but the lowest of pistes and around 10cm is likely throughout the day. The snow will be at its heaviest between 16:00 and 22:00 when around 6cm is likely. Another milder day than of late with highs of around zero.

Friday

Winds will back round to southerly in direction and will remain steady at around 10kmph. Light snow is likely with around 12cm possible in total and will be at its heaviest in the afternoon and early evening. A freeze height of around 1500 metres will see snow in the main but maybe a few rain showers will be interspersed within the snow around lunchtime.

Saturday

Another day with snow showers likely throughout the day, with around 12cm possible in total. The snow will be at its heaviest between 19:00 and 22:00 when around 8cm may fall. A freeze height of around 1500 metres should ensure snow rather than rain. Winds will remain at around 10kmph and be in the main southerly in direction.

Sunday

Mainly sunny intervals with the chance of some light snowfall. Daytime highs of around 0ºC with light southerly winds at around 8kmph.
