A mixed bag of weather this week in La Plagne

7-day weather forecast for the week of March 12th, 2018

With the ever-important Atlantic Jetstream located over the Iberian Peninsula, this week looks like being a combination of both winter and spring weather. Winds will be a bit stronger than of late, with Thursday looking as the windiest day of the week and there may be some early lift closures at elevation.

The early part of the week looks wintery with some snow and more sunshine towards the middle and end of the week.  Barometric pressure currently stands at around 1000mB and, with a mismatch of cold, warm and occluded fronts approaching from the Atlantic, a bit of everything looks on the cards for the weather this week. Within this mixed bag of weather there will be a couple of cracking days, with Wednesday and Friday looking like being real belters.

Monday

The day will start with light snowfall, which will get heavier as we move into the evening. Around 20cm of snow is likely to fall in total and, with a freeze height of around 1500 metres, it will fall as snow on all but the very lowest of elevations. Winds will be from the west and moderate in strength, at around 12kmph. Temperature at resort will be around -3ºC. A blanket of cloud covering resort will lead to a very overcast day.

Tuesday

Snow will fizzle out overnight and we should get some sunny intervals as the day goes on and the cloud cover breaks. A colder day than Monday, with daytime highs of around -6ºC and, with the wind veering to the north and remaining at around 12kmph, the wind chill will make it feel more like -9ºC.

Wednesday

A definite deckchair up on the hill day, so get your sun cream out. Sunny all day with light winds and warmer temperatures at around 0ºC, it looks like being a real bobby dazzler of a day. After the snow in the early part of the week, conditions on-piste should be as good as the weather!

Thursday

Snow showers will follow some early sunny intervals. The snow will get heavier as the day goes on and will be at its heaviest between 18:00 and 21:00, in total around 15cm is likely to fall. It will be a bit windier as the Jetstream shifts up towards Central Europe with southerly winds of 20/25kmph likely, which may lead to some lift closures higher up. Temperature in resort is likely to “top-out” at around -2ºC.

Friday

It looks like being another day to grab a deckchair and sun cream in the ever-strengthening sunshine at this time of year. Winds will be lighter, at around 7kmph, and will remain southerly in direction. With daytime highs of around -2ºC and after Thursday's light snowfall, another cracker of a day is likely. We may get a light dusting of snow at around 21:00 but only a couple of centimetres is likely.

Saturday

A largely cloudy day with light variable winds. Afternoon temperatures will be a bit warmer than of late with a high of around 2ºC. Hopefully, we may get some sunny intervals as the day draws to a close.

Sunday

Sunny intervals with continuing light and variable winds at around 5kmph. Another mild day with resort afternoon highs of around 3ºC. There is a possibility of some showers in the afternoon and, with temperatures above zero, this may fall as rain at resort level but as snow higher up.
