Thanks to its great free public transport system the need for a car in La Plagne is negligible. In this section we tell you all you need to know about how to get around La Plagne, with or without your own wheels.
As the pressure of public opinion mounts for ski resorts to become more eco-friendly La Plagne has come up with an interesting scheme to promote car pooling; a reduction of 15€ will be offered on a day ski pass if your car contains at least three people. We’re not sure exactly how they are going to monitor this, however, considering that 78% of CO² emissions in ski resorts are caused by transport it’s definitely a good move!
Car Parking in La Plagne
There are a good number of open air and covered car parks throughout the La Plagne resorts, however, parking is closely supervised and you should always look out for signposts informing you of restrictions. When snow clearing is scheduled to take place there may be alternative parking provided, but if you are parked in the wrong place at the wrong time, your vehicle may be unceremoniously dragged away or you may end up with a hefty fine!
However, with the exception of Belle Plagne, all levels of the resort have extensive free outdoor parking and should you be travelling in a motor home or camper van, you will find designated areas in Plagne Soleil and Plagne Villages with toilets and facilities for filling and emptying water tanks.
Parking tickets for cars and camper vans can be bought depending on the length of your stay (but cost approximately €35 per week) and should you find your car snowed in while you're here, La Plagne Tourist Office offers shovels free of charge! (You will simply be required to leave a small refundable deposit.)
If you want to keep your car underground and snow free during your stay, then you will need to pay to park in one of the following covered car parks:

Travelling Between the Airport & La Plagne
For La Plagne, the most convenient airport is Chambéry, situated 120 kms (2hrs) away. From here, you have a number of different methods of transport to choose from to get you up to resort.
If you can’t get a flight to Chambéry, the next best options are Grenoble (187kms), Lyon (198kms) or Geneva (201km); all of which are serviced by a number of the major airlines. Each airport has it pros and cons. Chambery is closest but may close in bad weather and your flight be diverted elsewhere. Geneva has excellent bus/shuttle links to La Plagne, but finding the route in a hire car isn't particularly easy. Lyon St-Exupery has fewer links to La Plagne, expecially midweek, but the journey is easier and quicker than from Geneva if you hire a car. Each major airline carries destination information on its website - although you either have to try all of them to find one which operates to from your local airport or know your local operators. However, before succumbing to a bargain flight into one of these airports, take a few minutes to investigate your onward transfer options below; your flight may only cost you £50 but your transfer to resort could set you back €300 - €400!!
